Homocysteine is an amino acid and an intermediate product of protein metabolism. It has many detrimental properties, which is why the body strives to keep its concentration as low as possible. Normally, the Homocysteine level is below 9 µmol/L. This is partly because the body uses Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6 and Folic Acid to break down Homocysteine and convert it into other necessary substances.
Elevated Homocysteine levels in the blood can be a sign that this process is not working properly. Recent studies show a possible link between elevated Homocysteine levels and the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease. In addition, high Homocysteine levels are now also considered a risk factor for the development of arteriosclerosis.
