The HOMA index is often cited as the standard for early detection of insulin resistance, particularly in longevity forums. However, care uses the TyG index for this purpose. The TyG index allows a reliable assessment of metabolic risk and in large studies has shown at least comparable, and in some cases even better, significance than the HOMA index in recognising an increased risk of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Only two fasting values are required for the calculation:
• Fasting blood glucose
• Triglycerides
These values are already part of the regular blood test. The HOMA index also requires a measurement of fasting insulin. This value can fluctuate more, is less well standardised between laboratories and incurs additional costs. For these reasons, we at care have deliberately opted for the TyG index as a simple, scientifically well-researched marker that is suitable for everyday use to assess insulin sensitivity and metabolic risk.
